Because the Red Wings would have complained about still having to play a lot of games in the Pacific time zone. It seemed like pleasing Detroit was one of the NHL's main goals. What I still don't get, why didn't they just add Columbus to the Eastern Conference (South East division)

Winnpeg would just take Colombus's spot in their division
Everything would have stayed the same, Conference's and Division's...

It'd be the same as the division this year, just no Colombus, instead Winnipeg. They will be playing more with the new Conference out of their time zone then with just Winnipeg in their old Division.

The NHL out-thinks itself on a regular basis. This is one of those times. It'd be the same as the division this year, just no Colombus, instead Winnipeg. They will be playing more with the new Conference out of their time zone then with just Winnipeg in their old Division.

Eh, that whole "send the wings east" failed because the league seemed to be more interested in pleasing Philly/Pittsburgh
I predict that my point is more correct then yours. With the help of time zones, those predictions are usually quite accurate

And the NHL says "screw you, we're taking you to court!"
I think it's just a bargaining chip to use since the CBA is up in July

If this alignment had been in place last season, the playoffs would have consisted of:
East 1: WAS, PHI, PIT, NYR
East 2: BOS, TB, MTL, BUF
Central: DET, NAS, CHI, DAL,
West: VAN, SJ, ANA, PHO
Of those teams, 15 really did make it to the playoffs. In the new system, DAL would have replaced LA.
Now, what I've done is attempted to simulate what would have happened in the playoffs. Although how the playoffs will exactly work is unknown (as to who plays who), I've simulated it using the following rules:
1. In the first round, the first placed team in a conference plays the fourth placed, and the second plays the third.
2. The winners from the first rounds meet their conference mates in the second round.
3. For the third round, East 1 winner plays East 2 winner and Central winner plays West.
4. Those winners meet for the Stanley Cup.
I simulated the results thus:
1. If a matchup really occurred in last year's playoffs, then that result is taken.
2. If not, the season series result is used.
3. If that ends in a tie, the highest finishing team goes through.
The simulation results are as follows:
First Round
WAS v NYR - WAS beat NYR 4:1 in the playoffs
PHI v PIT - PHI beat PIT 4:2 in the season series
BOS v BUF - BUF beat BOS 4:2 in the season series
TB v MTL - season series tied 2:2 - TB placed higher
DET v DAL - DAL beat DET 3:1 in the season series
NAS v CHI - season series tied 3:3 - NAS placed higher
VAN v PHO - season series tied 2:2 - VAN placed higher
SJ v ANA - season series tied 3:3 - SJ placed higher
Second Round
WAS v PHI - season series tied 2:2 - WAS placed higher
BUF v TB - season series tied 2:2 - TB placed higher
DAL v NAS - season series tied 2:2 - NAS placed higher
VAN v SJ - VAN beat SJ 4:1 in the playoffs
Third Round
WAS v TB - TB beat WAS 4:0 in the playoffs
NAS v VAN - VAN beat NAS 4:2 in the playoffs
Stanley Cup Final
TB v VAN - TB beat VAN 1:0 in the season series
Inspired by my post above, which I discovered after someone was asking about the new realignment, I simulated this year's playoffs under the proposed realignment. The rules of the simulation were as before, and the results were thus:
East 1: NYR, PIT, PHI, NJD
East 2: BOS, FLA, OTT, BUF
Central: STL, NAS, DET, CHI
West: VAN, PHO, SJ, LA
Of these teams, 15 really did make it to the playoffs. In the new system, BUF would have replaced WAS.
First Round
NYR v NJD - season series tied 3:3, NYR placed higher
PIT v PHI - PHI beat PIT 4:2 in the ECQFs
BOS v BUF - BOS win season series 4:2
FLA v OTT - OTT win season series 3:1
STL v CHI - CHI win season series 4:2
NAS v DET - NAS beat DET 4:1 in the WCQFs
VAN v LA - LA beat VAN 4:1 in the WCQFs
PHO v SJ - PHO win season series 4:2
Second Round
NYR v PHI - NYR win season series 6:0
BOS v OTT - BOS win season series 5:1
CHI v NAS - NAS win season series 4:2
LA v PHO - LA beat PHO 4:1 in WCFs
Third Round
NYR v BOS - NYR win season series 3:1
NAS v LA - LA win season series 3:1
Stanley Cup Final
NYR v LA - LA win season series 1:0
So, LA would have still won the Cup.

Looking at our division, we've got NJD, NYR, PIT, WAS etc. Making the playoffs is going to be more of a challenge, and some decent teams are going to miss out.
